Pierce recalled

Pierce recalled the only other time Burress was disciplined by having playing time reduced. It was Burress' third game with the Giants in 2005, and Tom Coughlin benched him for the first quarter against the Chargers because of a series of late arrivals to team meetings.
"Coach suspended him for the first quarter, and he made all those catches," said Pierce, referring to Burress' five-reception, 52-yard, one-TD effort.
But this punishment is different. Coughlin and general manager Jerry Reese have drawn a far bigger line in the sand, all in hopes of making Burress realize there is a price to be paid for unexcused absences and tardiness. Money wasn't the issue, because Burress has been fined dozens of times. Taking away playing time is the real punishment here, and Coughlin hopes it will finally change Burress' behavior.
He will get an idea Monday, when he will sit down with Burress for the first time since handing down the suspension.
"I look forward to talking to him," Coughlin said. "As far as me being concerned, I know he wants to play, and he wants to do whatever he has to do to play. We all look forward to Plax being back next Monday. I think it's a learning experience, but let's move on. We welcome him back."

Posada and Girardi have a long-standing relationship. The two split time at catcher during Girardi's four seasons with the Yankees, with Posada backing up Girardi early in that time and establishing himself as the starter later. Girardi thinks that history will help him handle that situation.
"I feel like I know him pretty well, because of all we went through together those four years, the fun and the success," Girardi said. "I felt like we made each other better players ... I have a pretty good understanding of what makes him tick."
Posada takes great pride in catching and always has. Girardi wants to believe that he can massage his need for Posada to play elsewhere sometimes so that Posada will not see it as a downgrade. But both are stubborn, which could complicate this situation. Posada bristles at all talk of his playing another position, and so does Girardi when pressed too hard.
With Hideki Matsui out, having Posada DH on occasion is a natural fit. But the Yankees need to make sure he knows what's going on and is at least somewhat on board with it. Because no other position player has the ear of the team as much as Posada does, and if Girardi loses him, it will hurt the Yankees.
Farm report: Trenton SS looks to future
Ramiro Peña was a late addition for the Yankees to the Futures All-Star Game Sunday at Yankee Stadium. Peña, a shortstop for Double-A Trenton, replaced Emilio Bonifacio, whom the Diamondbacks called up. Peña, who turns 23 next week, and catcher Jesus Montero are the Yankees' representatives.
Peña is hitting .276 with 16 doubles, five triples, two home runs, 38 RBIs and 41 runs in 80 games. He is considered a plus defensive player, but injuries the past couple of years have slowed his development.
Stat of the week: Stealing his thunder
Baserunners are taking advantage of Jorge Posada's shaky shoulder, and it's costing him playing time. Jose Molina, on the other hand, has cut down 49 percent of runners attempting to steal and has started six straight games.

hat's why it seemed close to a miracle that the Isles were able to salvage a point in the standings with their 3-2 overtime loss to Dallas in front of a season-low crowd of 8,161 last night at Nassau Coliseum. Miro Satan's power-play goal with 2:38 left in regulation sent the game to overtime, where the Stars' Mike Modano won it with his second score of the game just 35 seconds into OT.
"It was one of those games where maybe we shouldn't have gotten a point, but we found a way," Islanders coach Ted Nolan said. "Everything equals out in the end."
The power play was a crucial factor in the Islanders' early-season surge, but it was in a barren 1-for-29 stretch extending over eight games, including their first three opportunities against the Stars.

In fact, the Islanders had scored more shorthanded goals during that same stretch, including one by Richard Park at 9:07 of the second period after he beat Dallas goaltender Marty Turco in a race to a loose puck above the right circle and skated around him to reach the empty net for a 1-0 lead.
But Modano evened the score at 11:37 of the second with an open shot from the slot that went through the legs of Isles defender Radek Martinek and goaltender Rick DiPietro, who made 28 saves. Dallas took control at 6:07 of the third period after a pass from Stars defenseman Sergei Zubov ticked off an Islanders stick and jumped to Jeff Halpern at the bottom of the left circle. DiPietro had come out, expecting a shot from the middle, leaving space for Halpern to shoot behind him for a 2-1 lead.
Although the Isles managed to put 25 shots on Turco, they had a tough time picking their way through the Stars' defense in the neutral zone to find quality scoring chances. "They've always played a tight-checking game," said Isles center Mike Comrie, who spent most of his career in the Western Conference. "They thrive on turnovers and create a lot of speed through the neutral zone. You just try to get pucks by their defensemen and generate chances from behind the net."
Down a goal in the third, the Islanders got their third power play at 12:46 but couldn't get a single shot through to Turco. At one point, the Stars' goaltender got caught out of the crease, but Satan could not get his stick on the puck in the crowd in front.

se of affluent communities, police said, hate groups or white separatists such as the National Alliance have no foothold in Nassau or Suffolk counties. Residents won't tolerate such violence-prone groups interfering with their quality of life, police said.

"It's not really a good place where they will have people drawn to them, but that doesn't mean we are immune," said Det. Sgt. Gary Shapiro, coordinator of Nassau's Bias Crime Unit.

That was evident Friday and Saturday when red swastikas and other graffiti were spray-painted at a synagogue in Plan- dome, and at two schools, a home and on a street sign in neighboring North Shore communities.

Two males, 20 and 17, were arrested Sunday and charged with aggravated harassment and criminal mischief. They have pleaded not guilty and are free on bail.

On Tuesday night, it happened again.

he agency plans to say that the manatee "no longer meets the definition of an endangered species," according to the memo, which was sent to the White House.

Threatened species are still protected under the federal Endangered Species Act. Endangered means an animal is at a foreseeable risk of extinction. Threatened means a species could become endangered if protections are not maintained.

Chuck Underwood, a spokesman with the agency's Jacksonville office, told the Post the memo was drafted after a review of the manatee's progress, and government officials have not made a final decision on the issue yet.

"Until it gets final signatures on it, it could change," Underwood said. "It is an internal document. ... Is it the way we're going at the time? Yes. Is it also possible it could change? Yes."

An Associated Press call seeking more comment from the agency's Jacksonville office was not immediately returned.

Tyler Cordaro

Tyler Cordaro Actress Cameron Diaz has accepted "substantial" libel damages today, over a claim that she was cheating with a married man.

Diaz, who recently split from singer Justin Timberlake, sued American Media Incorporated, publishers of the National Enquirer, over an article which was published on it's website last May.

The article alleged that the actress engaged in a "smooching session" with Shane Nickerson, the supervising producer on her MTV

clean bean

Clean Bean Diaz's lawyer said that after the actress complained the article and accompanying photographs were removed from the website and that the hard copy edition distributed in the UK did not contain either.

The magazine has now accepted that that the photos did not show Diaz and Nickerson in a passionate clinch, but instead involved no more than the actress giving a friend a goodbye hug.
